Building muscle, protecting your health, and feeling stronger through perimenopause, menopause, and beyond.
When you hear the words “strength training,” what’s the first thing that comes to mind?
Lifting heavy weights? Building big muscles? Losing weight? Spending hours in the gym?
Well, I’m here to tell you that strength training is about SO much more than how you look in the mirror!
Especially for women over 40.
As we move through perimenopause, menopause, and beyond, our bodies begin changing in ways that can leave us wondering, “What the heck is happening to my body?!”
Trust me, I get it!
The workouts that worked in our 20s and 30s might not produce the same results anymore. We may notice changes in our waistline, energy levels, strength, and recovery.
And while hormones play a role, there’s something incredibly powerful we can do to support our bodies.
Build and maintain MUSCLE!
πͺ 1. Muscle Is More Important Than You Think
As we age, we naturally begin losing muscle mass, particularly if we’re not actively working to maintain it.
This process is called sarcopenia, and it can affect our strength, balance, mobility, and independence as we get older.
For women, hormonal changes during menopause can add another layer of challenges.
But here’s the good news!
Strength training helps preserve and build muscle, even if you’ve never lifted a weight in your life.
And no, ladies, lifting weights isn’t automatically going to make you bulky!
Building muscle helps you stay strong enough to enjoy the things you love, whether that’s hiking, gardening, traveling, playing with your grandchildren, or simply carrying groceries without struggling.
We’re not just exercising for today. We’re training for the life we want to live 10, 20, and 30 years from now!
𦴠2. Strong Muscles Help Support Strong Bones
Here’s something that doesn’t get talked about enough.
Women are at increased risk for osteoporosis as they age, particularly after menopause when estrogen levels decline.
Strength training places healthy stress on our bones, helping maintain bone density and supporting skeletal health.
Combined with appropriate nutrition and other weight-bearing activities, resistance training is one of the important tools we have for protecting our bones.
And let’s face it, nobody wants to become afraid of falling or getting injured as they get older.
Strength today helps support independence tomorrow.
π₯ 3. Muscle Supports Your Metabolism
Have you ever felt like you can look at a piece of chocolate cake and gain five pounds?
Welcome to midlife! π
While our metabolism doesn’t suddenly shut down when we turn 40 or 50, changes in muscle mass, activity levels, hormones, and lifestyle can influence how our bodies use energy.
Muscle tissue uses energy even when we’re resting.
Now, building muscle isn’t going to magically burn thousands of extra calories every day, but maintaining muscle supports healthy metabolism, blood sugar regulation, and overall body composition.
This is one reason I encourage women to stop focusing ONLY on the number on the scale.
Your weight doesn’t tell the whole story of your health.
You can become stronger, improve your body composition, and feel better even when the scale doesn’t move much.
β€οΈ 4. Strength Training Is Good for Your Mind, Too!
Let’s talk about something many women experience during perimenopause and menopause.
Mood swings. Stress. Anxiety. Poor sleep. Brain fog.
Sound familiar?
While exercise isn’t a cure for hormonal symptoms, regular strength training can support mental well-being, improve mood, and help reduce stress.
And there’s another benefit I absolutely LOVE.
CONFIDENCE!
There’s something incredibly empowering about picking up a weight you couldn’t lift a few weeks ago.
Or realizing you can get up off the floor more easily.
Or noticing that everyday activities don’t leave you feeling exhausted.
Those victories matter!
Sometimes the biggest transformation isn’t what happens to your body.
It’s what happens to the way you see yourself.
ποΈ 5. You Don’t Have to Be Fit to Get Started
This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions I hear.
“I need to get in shape before I join a fitness class.”
WHAT?!
That’s like saying you need to clean your house before the cleaning lady arrives! π
You don’t need to be in shape to start.
You don’t need expensive equipment.
And you certainly don’t need to know what you’re doing before asking for help.
Start where you are.
For many beginners, two strength training sessions per week is a great starting point.
Focus on learning proper technique, building consistency, and gradually increasing the challenge as you get stronger.
And please remember, you are not competing with the person next to you.
Your journey is YOUR journey.
